Many moms wonder while they’re pregnant how they’re going to lose their baby weight. Giving your body up to your baby can be frightening for some women, and even after your baby is born, you still don’t get your body back right away.
You may still look like you’re six months pregnant after giving birth. Unfortunately, this doesn’t go away over night. Remember, it took nine months to put the weight on – don’t expect it all to fall off within a few weeks.
One thing that moms can do to speed up their postpartum weight loss is to breastfeed. Right after giving birth, the uterus contracts to get itself back to pre-pregnancy size (this usually takes about six weeks). Breastfeeding also causes the uterus to contract, thus making the uterus shrink quicker. A lot of lucky moms find that breastfeeding alone is enough to help them shed the pounds and shrink their tummy. Others need to alter their diet and increase their activity.
Check with your doctor to find out when you can return (or begin) to diet and exercise. She’ll probably advise that you wait six weeks postpartum before trying to lose weight.
