Diet soda makes you gain weight?

Did you know that the more diet soda you drink (or diet pop as we Canadians call it), the greater your risk ofDiet soda linked to obesity becoming obese is? I’m not just talking about the people who drink gallons of it a week. All it takes is just one can of diet soda a day to increase your chance of becoming obese by a whopping 41 percent!

Don’t believe me? Well, you don’t have to. The proof is in the pudding. Or to quote that proverb correctly, the proof of the pudding is in the eating.

Take a look around you. Do you know anyone that drinks at least one can or bottle of diet soda a day who is fit and healthy and not overweight? I’m trying to think of someone I may know, but doggone it, I can’t come up with anyone.

My brother and mom drink diet soda like it’s going out of style (and regular soda as well) and neither of them will be fitting in to a pair of skinny jeans any time soon. Sorry mom and bro if you’re reading this!

I used to drink diet soda every day as well when I was married and boy oh boy, I was certainly not fitting in to any of my skinny jeans either.

Since I’ve been on my own I have only succumbed to diet soda a couple times a month, if that. And guess what – I wear skinny jeans!

Now, we have to be careful and realize that diet soda isn’t a direct cause of obesity. As far as I know nothing has been proven yet, but I believe that the main reason why you can still gain weight when drinking diet soda is because of the artificial sweeteners.

Aspartame in particular suppresses serotonin and makes us crave carbohydrates. Did you ever notice that when you drink a diet soda with a burger and fries from a fast food joint that you eat the entire meal? Have you also noticed that when you order a regular drink, whether it’s juice or regular sugar-laden soda, that you get full quickly and may not eat the entire meal?

To be frank, there is really no reason at all that any of us need to be drinking soft drinks, diet or otherwise.

Now, this is my own opinion based on my experience, but if you’d like to read up on this issue some more, here are some good links to follow:

In the meantime, I think I’ll stick to my filtered water. I’m pretty sure that doesn’t cause obesity or cancer/tumors/lesions. If you are a regular soft drink drinker, especially if it’s diet soda, I plead with you to cut down on your consumption of it, or cut it out of your diet altogether. It can only do more harm than good.
